Linux Build Review

Ethical, Professional & Pragmatic
A Linux Server Build Review benchmarks your Linux Server against industry recognised security standards – ensuring it is security-hardened and resilient to attack.
Our Linux Server Build Review is a ‘white-box’ assessment where our CREST accredited penetration testers will conduct a rigorous benchmark of the operating system configuration and then compare the results against industry-recognised security hardening standards giving you a clear action plan to improve your server security.
A Linux Server Build Review is essential because it ensures that the server configuration adheres to best security practices, reducing the risk of vulnerabilities. During the build process, servers are often configured with various services, packages, and settings, which can introduce security risks if not properly managed.
A build review ensures that unnecessary services are disabled, permissions are appropriately set, and critical updates are installed. This proactive step helps mitigate potential attack vectors, such as misconfigurations or weak default settings, that attackers could exploit.
What types of vulnerabilities can a Linux Build Review identify?
A detailed configuration review of your UNIX-based operating system provides you with assurance that it has been adequately hardened and has an increased level of resilience against cyber attack. Some common vulnerabilities that we regularly find during Linux Build Reviews include:
- Excessive Sudo users
- Exposed NFS file shares
- Weak service permissions
- Misconfigured Anti Virus (AV)
- Weak passwords in use
- Weak Secure SHell (SSH) configuration
- Missing security updates
- Privilege escalation vulnerabilities
- Weak security policies
- Weak IPTables firewall rules
Testing Process & Methodology
Using a combination of automated compliance tools and manual inspection our consultant will perform an in-depth review to assess your UNIX-based server’s resilience to attack.
We start with the hardening guidance from the Center for Internet Security (CIS) and any security frameworks that apply (such as PCI-DSS or ISO 27001). We also include additional configuration checks during the build review that have been derived from our own experience of Linux-based server environments and specific attack vectors that have been identified by our consultants during recent penetration tests. This ensures you can not only demonstrate compliance with relevant standards but also benefit from our real world experience at the leading edge of security testing to protect your systems from new and emerging threats.
Specifically, the following areas of the Linux server are covered by this review:
- Anti-Virus Protection
- Password Policy
- Account Lockout Policy
- SSH Configuration
- User Accounts
- Services
- Permitted User Logins
- SUID File Configuration
- World-Writeable Files
- World-Readable Files
- Vulnerability Assessment
- Firewall
- Network Port Scan
- Software Updates
- File systems
- Bootloaders
Preparing for your Linux Build Review
In order for us to be able to perform a configuration review of your UNIX-based operating system, we will require the following prior to the test commencing:
- A signed & completed Testing Consent Form
- Wired network connection
- Root (or Sudo user) credentials
- The SSH service enabled on all hosts to be reviewed
- List of IP addresses or hostnames to be assessed
Reporting
Our clear & concise penetration test reports enable everyone in your organisation to understand the vulnerabilities that have been identified and the real-world risk that your systems and data are exposed to.
Our reports include:
- A “board-level friendly” Executive Summary
- Comprehensive, evidence-based vulnerability reporting
- Risk-based vulnerability ranking with CVSS Scoring
- Technical references and links for further research by your technical team
Debrief Call
Once you have received our final report, you have the option of attending a conference call between the consultant(s) involved in delivering your project and individuals within your organisation who you feel would benefit from a more in-depth discussion of the report’s findings.
After Care
Once our consultancy engagement is complete and our final report has been delivered to you, our consultancy team remain available to you indefinitely for any questions you may have surrounding the report’s findings or our consultancy engagement with you.
