FortiNAC and FortiWeb Code Execution Flaws Patched

Fortinet has released two security updates to patch two critical severity vulnerabilities across their FortiNAC and FortiWeb products. Fortinet are a cybersecurity company that offer a range of products and solutions to improve the security of their customers. FortiNAC is a zero-trust Network Access Control solution used by organisations to enforce security policies, detect and mitigate threats, including protection against IoT threats. FortiWeb is a web application firewall (WAF) solution used to protect web apps and API from online threats, such as cross-site scripting, SQL injection, bots, and DDoS attacks.

The FortiNAC vulnerability CVE-2022-39952 has been given a critical severity rating and a CVSS base score of 9.8/10. This is an external control of file name or path vulnerability that occurs in the FortiNAC webserver. An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability by crafting an HTTP request which allows them to execute code that affects filesystem operations, and results in an arbitrary write on the system. A Fortinet security advisory about this flaw confirms it affects all FortiNAC versions of 8.3, 8.5, 8.6, 8.7, and 8.8, and versions 9.1.0 to 9.1.7, 9.2.0 to 9.2.5, and 9.4.0. No mitigations or workarounds have been suggested to resolve this vulnerability, so the only available fix is to upgrade to a patched version of FortiNAC, which includes 7.2.0 or above, 9.1.8 or above, 9.2.6 or above, and 9.4.1 or above.

The FortiWeb vulnerability CVE-2021-42756 has also been rated as a critical severity flaw, with a slightly lower CVSS base score of 9.30. This is a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability that occurs in the proxy daemon of FortiWeb. An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability by crafting an HTTP request which results in the buffer allocated to the stack (local variable or parameter function) being overwritten. This can allow the attacker to perform remote code execution (RCE) on the target system. The security advisory for this flaw mentions multiple stack-based buffer overflow vulnerabilities however only one CVE ID is provided. Affected versions of the FortiWeb product include all versions of 5.x and 6.4, 6.3.16 and below, 6.2.6 and below, 6.1.2 and below, and 6.0.7 and below. No mitigations or workarounds have been suggested to resolve this vulnerability, so the only available fix is to upgrade to a patched version of FortiWeb, which includes 7.0.0 or above, 6.3.17 or above, 6.2.7 or above, 6.1.3 or above, and 6.0.8 or above.
